Lunartail Grouper (Variola louti)

What: Lunartail Grouper (Variola louti). Length: about 38 cm (15 in).
Also called Lyretail Grouper, both common names refer to the pale crescent on the tail fin.

Where: I took this photo in the Red Sea, off the coast of the Sinai Peninsula.
This species also lives in the Indian Ocean.

  2. Ha ha. Actually, the fish has a sort of reddish tinge, but I wasn't close enough to light it well enough to bring out that color. Instead it came out sort of purplish.

    And BTW, here at The Right Blue we're always in a blue phase. ;-}
