Wordless Wednesday #16 - Red-spotted Sandperch

Redspotted Sandperch (Parapercis schauinslandii)

  1. This perky little fellow is called a Red-spotted Sandperch (Parapercis schauinslandii). He lives on the sand or on rubble slopes, usually at depths greater than 50 feet (15 m). He's a little guy -- only about 5 inches (13 cm) long, but he's a carnivore. He eats other smaller fishes as well as little crustaceans. We love the way these fish literally do perch on their sturdy little pelvic fins. I photographed this one at Honaunau Bay, Hawaii.

  5. Your fishies are beautiful as always. It's been freaking cold here. A couple days at -39F, but it has warmed up. You know you have reached maximum winter decompression when -1F seems warm. Happy WW.

  10. Great photo. That fish doesn't really look like a fish. Not exactly. But it's awesome.

  11. @ Napaboaniya - I'm pleased to have made the introduction!

@ Drowsey - It is an expressive little face, isn't it?

@ CK - Hi, and thank you, and welcome back to The Right Blue.

@ Carmi - I don't think he'd really go after your fingers. He likes to eat itty-bitty stuff.

@ Cathy (tundra) - I love your photos, too -- although I can't imagine being outside taking photos in the arctic -- but that's just me!!!

@ Ann -- If he could speak, I wonder what he'd say to us.

@ Gattina - Good if it made you laugh, and I do hope you are feeling better.

@ Roger -- I think you have said that before, but thank you again. :-D

@ Aussie - LOL, maybe he is stunned. Hadn't thought of that. (And yes of COURSE you can add me to your blogroll -- like you'd have to ask!)

@ Cheerio - Welcome to The Right Blue. Hopoe you'll come back and visit again.

  14. Well, doesn't he look like a math professor (or maybe science)? Nice one!

  15. Hi Bobbie,

The face of the fish is funny. Looks grouchy but it is suitable for a carnivore! Hahaha...

  22. Hey Guys,
Small predators like this one are always fun to photograph. They are brazen enough to stay in view long enough to get a photo, but sometimes run for cover just as you press your shutter button!

  28. For some reason his posture makes me think he is trying to look bigger than he is (and I don't know why I'm thinking it's a male fish :). He looks like he's protecting something.

Great shot! I need to come by here more often. Visiting your site is like taking a vacation without leaving my desk.

    Happy WW!!

  30. Reminds me of the carnivorous fish we had when I was a kid. The dad fishes ate the babies and sometimes everyone else. Nice photo.

  32. Ugh! The fish "looks" like it wants to come and kiss you with those big lips and rolling eyes... reminds me a little of the fairy tale Frog King (although it has nothing to do with).

    Happy WW, Tina

  41. @ Jams - I'm not surprised you hadn't heard of this fish. It's not that common, except in a few places.

@ Shannon - These little guys are ALWAYS looking for a meal. LOL.

    @ Martie - Hmm, that's a different description.

@ Serena - So you think he looks grouchy? Maybe he's just annoyed at the photographer.

@ Zam - No, he wouldn't hurt you.

@ Jientje - It's easy to fall in love underwater.

@ Daisy - Yes, he's pretty good at standing on his short little fins.

@ Christopher S. - Yes, if you are like me, you probably have more photos of fish tails than you'd like.

@ Alice - I had not heard of Friday Ark, but I will look into it. Thanks for the tip.

@ Atomik K. - Yeah, my cat would probably make short work of this guy, too.

@ Gabriel - LOL at "unprocessed fish sticks"

@ Harlekwin - He probably is protecting his turf -- or THINKS he is.

@ Pete - That carnivorous fish of yours certainly was a brute to eat his own young!

@ Kyla - Good for you. Hope you see a lot of wonderful things underwater.

@ Tina - We can only imagine what would happen if someone kissed this sandperch. Who knows -- maybe he would turn into a prince.

    @ Francine - Yes, we do love fishes around here -- and other little marine critters, too. ;-}

@ Mary (the teach) - No, you must be thinking of Hanauma Bay. This photo was taken at Honaunau Bay, which along the southwest shore of the Big Island of Hawaii. (I know that those Hawaiian names often look/sound alike.)

And to all the rest of you, too -- thanks so much for visiting and for your complimentary comments on the photo.
