The were old and badly weathered out but incredibly large, the big ones more than 3 feet across. It took a couple of large men to move one of the shells. <BR/><BR/>The boat boys told us they had been thrown up on the beach along with very large pieces of rock and coral by the explosion of Krakatau in the 1800's. <BR/><BR/>Cody told me he saw smaller ones when he was getting his diving cert off Palau Putri north of Jakarta. The mantles were blue or blue green. One of these days I am going to have to learn to dive! In any case, it is one of the smaller species, as Giant Clams go -- less than a foot (30cm) across.<BR/><BR/>The flesh of the mantle varies in color, depending on the type of algae growing in the tissues. This one is nearly black with ivory speckles. Others can have greenish or blue color.<BR/><BR/>And no, they don't snap at passing divers and trap them!
