This is a macro photo of a nudibranch (AKA sea slug). In real life, the creature is only about two inches (5cm) long. The two things sticking up from its 'head' are sensory organs. Its gills are the fluffy tree-like structure sticking up near the rear.

Wow, it's beautiful! I'm learning that nudibranches are some of the most colorful creatures of the sea. Great shot too! :-)

ReplyDeleteThe colors on nudibranchs are amazing.
ReplyDeleteThat is stunning, and so not what I was picturing when I read "nudibranch" LOL. (Yes, I do apparently have the sense of humor of an 8 year old boy. Comes from parenting one I suppose.)
ReplyDeleteNature continues to awe me...
ReplyDeleteThat is simply stunning!
ReplyDeleteI never heard of these before, at least not by their official name. What a fascinating photo!

Incredible shot Bobbie, don't you just love the world of macro photography !!
ReplyDeleteThanks for explaining what this is Bobbie. I like the color. It almost looks transparent.
ReplyDeleteNow that's an interesting sea creature. It actually looks intertidal
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful, but indeed it does not look real!
ReplyDeleteI visited your link and now I know there is a "Sea Slug Forum". Who would have thought?!
What was the size of this specimen?
@ Bernie - Yes, I do love macro photography!
ReplyDelete@ Becky - I like the colors, too. By the way, you can't see it in this photo but the underside has a bit of purple.
@ Robert S. - No, this creature is not from the intertidal zone. It lives on reefs at depths of 10 meters or more.
@ Will - The Sea Slug Forum is a wonderful treasure trove of information about these kinds of critters.
This specimen was nearly two inches long.
