What a coincidence ! I just saw one like that @ days ago when I made an excursion on a glass boat !! Yes Hurghada has changed a lot since I saw it in 2001 I didn't recognize anything !

@ Carmi, I hope the Hawksbill photo did give you nice dreams.
@ Chris - We've seen little hatchlings, too, but not here in Hawaii. Turtles in our waters nest on the uninhabited Northwest Islands of the Hawaiian chain, so we rarely get to see hatchlings locally. The ones we saw were in Malaysia.
@ Yuko (Webmaster Pomona) - I'm glad you said "almost ride" because as tempting as it might seem, to try to ride a sea turtle is NOT a good thing. Sea turtles are air breathers, and although they can hold their breaths for quite a long time under water, they do have to surface for a breath now and then. For this reason they completely panic when anything or anyone touches them underwater. They have an innate fear of being restrained.
@ ZJ - yes, the Hawksbill turtles are officially an endangered species. Their populations are in serious decline all over the world.
@ Gattina - I'm glad you had the chance to see one of these turtles. I've been following the story of your visit to Hurghada on your blog and it sounds like you're having a really good time.
@ Kathy - No, not Myrtle this time. In fact this turtle is a different species from Myrtle. Myrtle is a Green Sea Turtle, while this one is a Hawksbill. We do have some Hawksbills in Hawaii, too, but very few compared to the Greens.
@ Sarah - Yes, I took the photo.
@ Frigga - No telling exactly how old this turtle is -- but it was rather large for its species, so definitely well into adulthood.
@ Mary - Underwater photography can be tricky. Everything is always moving -- the water, the subjects, and the photographer! By the way, I hope your gallery showing is a huge success!

This sea turtle is a Hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata). The photo was taken in the Red Sea at a place called Thomas Reef, in the Tiran Straits.
