This week's post is a classic Red Sea reef scene. No, those aren't goldfish. They are Scalefin Anthias (Pseudanthias squamipinnis), and they are very common in the Red Sea. They often swarm over a reef, just like in this photo. The fluffy looking greenish stuff is not broccoli -- and it's not even a plant. It's a kind of soft coral (Dendronephthia sp.) that also is abundant on Red Sea reefs. In sum, you could say this is a prototypical Red Sea reef scene. The photo was taken in a marine preserve off the coast of Egypt.
Oh that's funny ! Without reading your explanations I thought your picture reminded me the Red Sea !! I have seen so many of these little fishes there and I am going back on Nov 2nd !
@ Isabelle - Someone else also told me they thought this photo would make a nice wallpaper, too. Hmmm. Maybe I'll have to think about that.
@ Gattina - If you have been diving or snorkeling in the Red Sea, I'm not surprised you recognized the photo right away. You can't miss those fish there. Hope you have fun there next month.
Oh wow, this is a splendid underwater shot! I didn't know that there are great things lying underneath the Red Sea. I agree with one of them here, this would make a perfect wallpaper!

Hi Bobbie, "Wordless Wednesday?", it left my daughter speechless! We have fun going through the corals, trying to figure out the type of fish and even discussed why the sea is blue! Thanks for the great shot. Take care.

wonderful shot...such depth... underwater photography is one area i would LOVE to explore..
